Orthoptera and Coleoptera are among the most important prey for insectivorous birds such as the Lesser Kestrel, Roller, Lesser Grey Shrike, and
Southern Grey Shrike. Mandibles are among the most resistant portions and constitute a common prey remains in pellets. The following
photographs show the main differences in French Orthoptera between Tettigoniidae (Saga pedo*), Gryllotalpidae (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa), Gryllidae
(Gryllus campestris) and Caelifera (Prionotropis hystrix rhodanica**). The last two photographs show the difference between a granivorous Grasshopper
(Calliptamus sp) and an herbivorous Grasshopper (Oedaleus decorus). Each line represents 2mm in lenght.
